Early Reading Foundations

For many 4-year-olds, this is a genuine head start — not because they need to read early, but because this age is ideal for building strong foundations for future reading success.

At this stage, many children are only beginning to develop awareness of sounds, letters, and how spoken language connects to print. A structured early reading approach helps children become familiar with the underlying sound system before reading instruction becomes more formal at school.

Children who begin school already comfortable with sounds, blending, and early decoding often find the transition into reading far less stressful and much more confident. The brain is also especially responsive to language and reading development between ages 4 and 7.

That said, the “right time” depends on your individual child. The Reading Assessment is designed to determine whether your child is developmentally ready — and if they are not quite there yet, I will tell you honestly and recommend waiting a little longer.

All three timings work, for different reasons:

• Before school starts. Builds the foundation so your child enters Foundation / Year 0 already familiar with letter sounds and basic blending. The first term of school becomes consolidation rather than first exposure.
  

• During the first year of school. Reinforces classroom phonics one-to-one. Particularly valuable if your child is in a large class or if the pace doesn't quite match their needs.

• After the first year. Most useful if the Year 1 phonics check or your child's classroom reading shows specific gaps that need filling.
  

Any of these is a good reason to start. The Reading Assessment will tell us where your child currently is and what makes the most sense.

It depends on where your child is. A 6-year-old who is reading age-appropriately and just wants to consolidate is foundations. A 6-year-old who is falling behind expectations or whose Year 1 phonics check has flagged concerns is intervention — and the Specialist Reading Support program may be the better fit.

The Reading Assessment will tell us which is the right path. If your child needs intervention rather than foundations, I'll let you know.

A common worry, and a fair one. The honest answer: pushing happens when the work doesn't match the child. This program is designed to do the opposite — every step is matched to your child's exact stage of development, paced gently, and built around success.

Children who experience reading as logical and achievable from the start tend to develop a stronger love of reading, not a weaker one. The pressure parents fear comes from confusion and failure, not from structured early teaching.

Not necessarily. Many 4–5 year olds appear uninterested in reading because reading hasn't yet been made accessible to them — the underlying sound system simply hasn't clicked. Once it does, interest often follows naturally.

The Reading Assessment will show whether your child is developmentally ready to engage with structured early reading work, or whether waiting a few months is the right call. I'll tell you honestly which I think it is.

Possibly — and the assessment will tell us. Some children who appear to read are decoding accurately and don't need this program. Others are sight-recognising whole words or guessing from pictures, which feels like reading but isn't sustainable. That habit usually catches up with children in Year 2 or 3, when texts get harder.

If your child is in the second category, this is exactly the right intervention before the gap becomes a problem. If they're in the first, I'll tell you and we'll save you the program fee.

Most schools now teach phonics and early reading in a structured way, and that is genuinely positive. It means your child is likely already receiving important foundational reading instruction in the classroom.

What this program adds is individualized, one-to-one teaching. Even excellent classroom phonics is still delivered to large groups of children at a mixed pace. Some children move through concepts quickly, while others quietly miss small but important steps without anyone realizing it.

One-to-one teaching allows every skill to be taught, practiced, and secured before moving on. This creates a stronger and more complete reading foundation, rather than one built on gaps or guesswork.

As a current Reception teacher, I see every day how much faster children progress when classroom learning is reinforced individually — even when the classroom teaching itself is strong.

Almost certainly not. Most schools now teach phonics and early reading in a structured way, so the methodology I use will usually support and reinforce what your child is already learning at school. The difference is the pace, the precision, and the individual attention.

Schools may use different programs, terminology, or reading schemes, but strong foundational reading skills transfer across them all.

If your child’s school happens to use a different approach, the structured method I teach will still give them the underlying skills they may otherwise be missing — without creating confusion or contradiction.

Much less common now than it used to be, since most schools now teach phonics and early reading in a more structured way.

That said, small differences between schools are completely normal. Schools may use different terminology, different teaching sequences, or different reading schemes, but the underlying sounds, patterns, and reading principles remain the same.

The honest answer for your child is that there are several valid ways to organize and teach reading skills — and children adapt to this very easily. The goal is not to memorize one program, but to build strong underlying reading foundations that transfer across all of them.

Most children aged 4–6 are ready for some version of this work, but the right starting point varies enormously. The Reading Assessment establishes exactly where your child is — what they already know, what's developmentally appropriate to introduce next, and what isn't yet.

If your child isn't ready for the program, I'll tell you and recommend revisiting in a few months. The 2,000 THB assessment is yours to keep regardless.

Very common at this age. The first session is built around play and connection, not performance — most children warm up within 10–15 minutes.

If your child is exceptionally reserved, you can start in "child and parent together" mode (sitting alongside on the same device) for the first few sessions, then transition once they're comfortable.

Sessions are designed with multiple short, varied activities rather than one long task. Most children this age sustain attention well within this format because the pace keeps them engaged.

If your child genuinely struggles with 45 minutes, we'll discuss a different structure during the assessment.

Each session is 45 minutes, delivered live online via Zoom.

Two sessions per week is the recommended frequency for early reading foundations.

Consistent, frequent practice is what builds reading skills at this stage — anything less risks slow drift rather than steady building. More intensive options (three or more sessions per week) are available where faster progress is needed or your child is preparing for a school transition.

The right frequency for your child is decided together after the Reading Assessment.

Cancellations made more than 24 hours before the scheduled session are rescheduled at no cost.

Cancellations made within 24 hours are forfeited from your package, with one exception: if your child is genuinely unwell, the session is rescheduled at no cost (one sick-day exception per package).

Your 10-session package never expires.

A laptop or tablet with a webcam, a quiet space for 45 minutes, Zoom installed, a small whiteboard with marker and eraser (or a notebook and pencil), and headphones if your child has them.

Your child's Sunshine Online subscription, lesson materials, and home practice resources are included in your package.

You choose how you participate. You can sit alongside your child sharing one device, join from a separate device with your camera and microphone hidden, or step away and let your child work independently.

Most parents of children this age start by sitting alongside, especially in the first few sessions — this is encouraged but never required.

Most parents notice visible change within 4–6 sessions — your child blending sounds they couldn't blend before, recognising letter patterns, attempting unfamiliar words rather than guessing.

The Mid-Program Reading Review at Session 5 documents these gains formally so you have evidence of progress, not just impression.

Three formal written assessments are built into every package: an Initial Reading Profile before Session 1, a Mid-Program Reading Review after Session 5, and an End-of-Program Reading Review after Session 10. Each tests the same domains using the same measures, so progress is documented in clear, comparable terms.

You receive each as a written PDF you can keep.

Most children at this stage benefit from continuing into a second package as they progress through the structured literacy sequence. Some are ready to consolidate gains independently with home practice for a term, then return for a follow-up block.

The End-of-Program Reading Review includes specific recommendations on what makes sense for your child — including whether continuing is necessary at all.

A 45-minute live online assessment with your child, a written Reading Profile delivered within 48 hours documenting your child's strengths and specific gaps and a personalised next-step plan.

The 2,000 THB is fully credited toward your program if you continue.

No. For children this age, the assessment looks more like one-to-one game-based teaching than testing — calm, low-pressure, paced entirely to your child. Most children enjoy the session.

You still receive the full assessment, the written Reading Profile, and the personalised plan — yours to keep regardless of what you decide.

I'll tell you directly, and recommend revisiting in a few months once they're more developmentally prepared. Starting before a child is ready is genuinely counterproductive — better to wait than to teach a child to associate reading with confusion.
